I have a growing appreciation for street art

Who knows a good website that might list more places in Melbourne (or Seattle) where I can find some really intriguing graffiti?

Ok, I’m going to sound ghetto and hardcore, but if you ever want to watch a ‘piece’ being ‘thrown up’ by a ‘crew’, let me know, as I know quite a few people who do it on a regular basis. I’m not a huge fan of tags, but when you sit back and watch 5 or so people work together to put a piece together in a matter of minutes, its quite impressive.

yeah thats more stencil art then graffiti art, I love the stuff and I love seeing it around the lane ways of Melbourne and on factory walls near the train lines in the inner city. Just adds to the edgy arty vibe we have down here.

I have a few links for it:

My ex-housemate used to be into the whole stencil art thing… Not the normal crappy graffiti you see everywhere. :P I actually got to meet a lot of the street artists through her… guys like HAHA, Sync and Optic. I see their work everywhere now. :S

They (the stencil artists) all used to have their own ‘illegal’ exhibitions in Edinburgh gardens in Fitzroy (It was just a word of mouth thing). It was kinda cool, they’d all meet and show their work.. and people who came along could swap their artwork or take home what they liked.

I’ll try to find out when they meet.. I can’t remember if it was the first or second Sunday night of the month, or something like that. Worth going though, I’d recommend it!

That’s very much of the Banksy vibe - http://www.banksy.co.uk/ - some very cool stuff. I’m not sure if there’s any really guide to where to spot them, though the laneway to Croft institute is usually packed with ‘em. Melbourne is counted among some of the bigger places in the world for stencil art, and it’s something I miss a little since coming up here - friend of mine is on the fringes of the scene, tho she’s more of the spray style.

Also check out http://www.woostercollective.com/ - blog mainly focused on street art, which includes stencil stuff. Search for Melbourne and you’ll see some good samples.
