Seattle Update
Sat, 20 Jan 2007.
Ok so things are rolling steadily along. First of all, no plane ticket. Yet. This is one of the things I hope to be decided soon so I have more of a deadline to work towards.
Yes, I have a visa now. I’ve been given clearance to work in the United States.
What am I doing right now? Filling out paperwork. I need to figure out what things I am going to send into temporary storage and the sort of place I wish to move in to.
Things that I should ship by sea (and into temporary storage):
4 to 6 weeks by sea
- Electric guitar
- Amp
- Dumbbells + weights
- Old books
- Spare clothes
Stuff I should take with me on my flight:
I might be able to live on one suitcase
- Clothes
- Toiletries
- Paperwork + stationary
- Useful books
- Laptop + CDs + accessories
- Jewellery
As for where I want to live? I’ve told the people that I’d like help looking for an apartment in an urban area in the ballpark of US$400 to $500 per week. Umm, I’m not sure if that number should include rental of appliances and furniture. I’m not very savvy with these things.
I am going to be doing most of my commuting via Seattle’s public transport system (although I am going to drive a rental for a fortnight or so when I get there).

$400-500/week is going to be one dope apartment :-D
Holy crap. I won’t bother asking what you’re getting paid, I’ll just note it down as “arseloads more than me”.
Well, there is quite a boom in real estate over there right now and I could possibly be living beyond my means.
I can’t really say until I get there. I might decide to scale it down after the initial lease is up.
US$2000/mo is a good NY apartment, as far as I’ve been told, so that does sound expensive. Considering costs per week for me amounted to $200 a week, you may still be able to live pretty comfortably going on typical US grad salaries that I know.
Still, given you’ve listed Jewellery, how much bling do you have man? :D
Don’t forget to take your rims up with you man! A man shouldn’t drive with anything less than 22’s.
lachie lachie lachie, when will you learn to keep up! 30’s are the new 22’s.
Jack - I hope you find an apartment like the one on Mad About You. Good luck :-)
My aim is to get an apartment so good that you’d think I was living in the fantasy world of Friends.
How much bling do I have? Err… like 2 or 3 items. I only listed it because I’d feel safer travelling with them than having them shipped.
err…… good luck
if you have to rent appliances on top of your actual rent your looking at between $7- $20 per appliance. It sure adds up if you have to rent every thing in your place so it might be better to splurge at the start and buy some crappy whitegoods…or get a furnished apartmentand yyou have to pay for utilities. i recently forgot about all this stuff so im reminding you lol. and yeah $400-$500 for an apartment sounds really expensive rofl but the market might be different there, who knows?
i bet you’re gonna get a massive studio style one. i can jsut see you sitting in the midlle of it with your little pile of things you took on teh plane with you..all alone on your expensive polished floorboards
lol a quick look at teh net shows that you can get a 1 bed and bathroom place or a simlar size studio aprtment for between $545 and $1400 PER MONTH in the heart of the city.
lol this is smack bang in teh middle of teh curve indicated by jacks price range in that size depends if you want soemthing big or small i supose http://www.seattlerentals.com/6819 looks pretty fancy though not so huge
Say “no” to cheap whitegoods- they will destroy the bling value of your polished floorboards, and more-ever, you’ll end up paying for them when you get the electricity bill. Oh & save the planet etc.
SINCE WHEN DID YOU CARE ABOUT SAVING THE PLANET YOU ASSHOLE
