Useful things to know

First thing

I was getting two eggs out of the fridge. I put these two eggs on the top of the fridge and then I put the carton back into the fridge. When I looked, I only saw one egg. That is because when I closed the fridge door, I had heard the sound of an egg rolling across the roof of the fridge and cracking open behind the fridge.

Second thing

The toilets in America are noticeably different. They are built lower, use more water and flush in a weird way. For whatever reason, they are prone to clogging and not very good at flushing very well. Our toilet had a very weak flush. We googled and found a nice clean solution: pour a bunch of dishwashing liquid into the bowl, pour a whole bunch of water in from a height so you create a nice foam and finally let the detergent do its work.

Actually I think some toilets use less water. A lot have a handy dandy label on them saying how much water they use, 3.8 gallons and 1.9 gallons are common values- the latter probably comparable to water-efficient flush toilets the world around. But testiment to the tendency of these toilets to block is that you will rarely find a toilet without a plunger by its side, whereas we’ve not needed a plunger at home in 20 years. (Of course, we have a horribly inefficient toilet.)
