Cable TV is overrated

So Mark writes about not wanting TV anymore even though he is sick. He also points to a Reddit discussion about giving up TV.

I, too, have been struggling with the big black box in the living room. My third parent. My main source of general knowledge and Americana prior to the discovery that the Internet actually has interesting writing on it.

See, before I moved out, I imagined I could live without a TV. All I need is internet and I would have all the crap I needed. But one thing I didn’t count on is that it was kinda lonely to begin with and I love the idea of just sitting on the couch and letting my brain rest for a little while. Also, there are a lot of good TV series going on at the moment.

Besides, cable TV is often thought of as a necessity here. Like electricity, water or two layers of cheese.

But! I can see signs that I don’t need a cable TV subscription. Now that I’ve settled in to my new apartment and things are becoming routine, I see the stranglehold of TV slipping. About 50% of the time, I actually have the TV plugged into my laptop and the other 50% of the time is spent watching random shit that is good once in a while but make me want to shoot myself if I kept up with every single episode (I’m looking at you, King of The Hill).

I think once I establish even a tiny bit of a social life, say, something to do on the weekends? I will be ready to cancel my cable TV subscription. God bless you internet and all your delicious caramel-centred blogs with rich milk chocolate shells.

Hell yeah! I used to have pay telly back when I was living in Footscray. I never really watched it though… even though there was 50 channels or more, there was still often nothing on!

Most of it was total rubbish.. any TV I did watch was usually free-to-air because the shows were better quality. Even the music videos on MTV were crap.. most of it was just bad west coast rap with all the typical stereotypes.

But yeah.. pay TV is kinda shit if you ask me. Free to air (plus bitahemtorrent) kicks ass for most stuff.. at least in Aus.

How much is cable tv over there? Is it comparable to in Aus? I’m assuming not. The only thing that would slightly raise interest is for myself is the documentary channels, possibly. Maybe the movie channels, but ‘normal’ sitcoms tend to bore me. Thats my two cents.

Comments are off (unless you ask nicely).
