Things to do with your new Xbox 360

Tagged:

I just bought a new Xbox 360. There are lots of things to do with it.

Add me to your friends list! I am KleptoJack and I need fellow newbies to compete against. Send me a message so I know how you found me. :)

My Gamertag

My sad gamerscore :(

1. Stop Spending

I know, I know. You want to accessorize. More controllers, headsets, wireless network adapter, battery chargers, racing wheel, games, marketplace, etc. Sit down and actually play some games. You can buy what you want later. The upsell is attractive but unnecessary for some gaming fun.

2. Get some free shit

My 360 came with a card that gave me a Gold membership. Gold members get to play online multiplayer and they get some other nice things. Read about Silver vs. Gold membership.

Ok the free shit. There are lots of HD movie trailers that look awesome. They will make you glad you bought a HDTV. You can also check out this list of free gamerpics and this list of free dashboard themes [link removed, site is dead].

Also, download the demos. If you are like me and 1) bad at games and 2) have commitment issues then demos are a great way to feel good about yourself. It might also stop you from buying a really bad game like Spider-Man 3.

3. Add some friends!

Ask all your friends if they want to challenge you in a game of Uno or whatever. If you don’t have any friends, you can add me and I will let you win in at Uno. My gamertag is KleptoJack (I chose this gamertag because it was appropriately childish but if I ever get a really high score, it still sounds sort of badass).

4. Stay up till 4am and ignore your family/friends/boss

Those guys suck. Only Xbox understands you.

5. Pray that your Xbox doesn’t die

Nobody knows for sure the failure rate of Xboxes but treat it with respect. Treat it like it’s a flight control system or the doctor that does your prostate exam. Be nice to it and hopefully it will do its job without complaint.

You’re soo right about the accessorising thing. It’s way too easy to go out and buy extra crap when you dont need it :(

Jack

I know! I went and bought some things the other day. I’m not proud of myself. :(

Daniel

Erm, jeez, I was kinda hoping that a flight deck had at least one backup, if not military-styles triple-backup using three different, yet compatible, implementations.

andrew

how long did you sit there thinking up your screen name? i used to sit there for ages :( even for single player games

AkaiChou

I like the panda. :3

Jack

With singleplayer games, I came up with a good system. I named my Baldur’s Gate 2 character: Skunklar. With each new singleplayer character, I’d just call them Skunklar II or whatever. Saved me some time.

This name? I sat and thought about it for a few minutes but then I thought, “I want to play games!” Anyway, Xbox Live is cool because they let you change your gamertag (for a price).

Jack

I too like the panda.
