Conversational Adjustment
Sat, 09 Jun 2007.
I think I’m going to change the way I start that first conversation with strangers here.
So far it’s “Oh I’m from Melbourne. Yeah, I’m here for work. I’m a programmer. I make computer programs.”
And then people make a half-assed attempt to relate to the job of programming. Something along the lines of, “Crushing those bugs, huh? Haha,” or, “My cousin did tech support for a while. He liked that job.”
Whatever. I don’t want to talk about computers any more than you do.
So I was thinking from now on, it’s going to be “Oh I’m from Melbourne, Australia. Why am I in Seattle? Well I just graduated from uni and it was time for me to move out. Yeah it’s a big move but so far I think Seattle has been worth it.” Etc.
Sure, I’m being more vague but my hope is that it won’t lead conversation into a dead end and we can keep talking about more important things like oral sex technique, what constitutes good coffee and the sorts of food where beer is a better accompaniment than wine.

I like that strategy!
