Microsoft’s Windows Live Writer Beta: Click to enlarge image.
Installed the beta of Microsoft Windows Live Writer, gave it my blog URL, username and password and it automagically downloaded my theme. Very impressive. I recommend this to anyone who blogs but doesn’t like the technical stuff.
Good things:
- Posts look exactly like they should
- Much easier to use and create links with
- Supports Wordpress right out of the box
Problems:
- Doesn’t allow editing of existing posts
- Not as good as Radiohead’s 1997 landmark album, OK Computer

I use it almost exclusively. Being a Windows app, it is kind of a memory hog, but it’s worth it to be able to see how exactly how your entry will look as you’re writing it. There’s some half-decent plugins for it as well.
It’s also only on Windows you insensitive clod!
So you get me all hot and bothered with this and then karan says it’s only for windows? Nice, Jack.
Jen Jen Jen, what can I say? I guess I’m just a tease (and Karan is a buzzkill).
For the Mac, I highly recommend MarsEdit. It doesn’t have the super cool feature of automatically downloading your styles but it does let you write your own template. That means if you’re geeky or you have a geeky friend, you can create a template in your own style and preview a post as it would appear for reals.
Added bonus is that you can edit your last 10 posts with MarsEdit.
You don’t get WYSIWYG editing either, but if you install a Wordpress plugin like Markdown then it’s a pretty good compromise.
I’m not taking away from the fact that it’s a good (great?) product, it’s just that it’s Windows Live Writer, so it’s not like you could expect it to be on anything but Windows :) Still, shows some good things are still coming out of Redmond.
