La Musique
Sun, 02 Mar 2008.
Thank you for all your, um, diplomatic comments about my singing. I can actually sing better than that and now I know better than to try and cover a song that is popular because of its strong female vocals.
But let’s keep talking music.
After moving to Seattle and talking to people about my musical tastes, I realize I’m nowhere near as indie as I thought I was. I’m ok with that because it’s just too damn hard to try and appear non-conformist. Before I might have been a conforming “non-conformist” but now I’m just one degree away from the mainstream in that tragic zone where I am simultaneously clueless about pop and indie music. (Nevermind that the words “indie”, “emo” and “taste” have lost all meaning).
If you live in Seattle and go to a lot of concerts then please be my friend and take me places with you. I am easy on the eyes and a very pleasant drunk. Also, I will not steal your girlfriend.
Anyway, let’s put aside the judgment of others and the various popularity contests. Here’s what I’m listening to:
- On my computer: Regina Spektor, Metric, Feist
- In my car: Radiohead, Ben Folds (Five), Air, Zero 7, Barack Obama (his audiobook)
- On my portable music thingo: Some combination of the above
What I’m doing with my in-car music is just burning old favorites that I never get tired of. Still to add to my car: Damien Rice, Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, indie rock bands beginning with “The” and indie rock bands that have names that sound like they should begin with “The”.
PS. You can find out more about what I listen to on my last.fm profile

You and I have very similar taste in music
Le sigh. There’s so much good music out there. You have quite good taste in music (in my opinion), and no, I wouldn’t consider it super indie. But that’s ok. Most indie people are too arrogant for their own good. ;) I can say that. I used to be one of those people. Then again, southern indie might be different than Seattle indie. Plus, there’s so much other awesome stuff out there that isn’t considered “indie”. Whatever, yuck, no more indie talk.
Anyhoo… you should record a song that isn’t girly… or you could up it or lower it a couple of keys and it might work better for you.
Deutlich: We do! Even last.fm thinks we have Very High compatibility. Do you wallow in sad music like I am prone to do? Just go deep underwater for hours and only surface to feed?
Poodlegoose: Yeah, I find as I get older, the less I need to worry about being judged about my music. The fact that, deep down, everybody on Earth has at least one favourite Britney song is a comforting thought.
how ’bout A Fine Frenzy?
Ooh, I’ve never heard of A Fine Frenzy. I’ll have to check her (them?) out. Thanks!
I recommend Ingrid Michaelson, and second A Fine Frenzy.
L - Oh trust me, I’ve been so heavy into Ingrid lately I need a break. I wrote about going to her concert in Seattle.
We listen to pretty much the same things. Radiohead and Ben Folds? Love. So are Kate Walsh, Anya Marina, Holly Brook, and Joshua Radin. I’m a sucker for sad songs. I just lie down on the living room floor and drown in it.
Lisa: I love Ben Folds so much. I’ve went to his show when he was touring for Songs for Silverman and again when he was performing with various orchestras across Australia. He really plays to the crowd.
Yeah… my friends hate me sometimes for drowning in such sad music.
Oh I love Ben Folds and Feist, very nice music choices.
Sorry, I hadn’t read your previous post about Ingrid. Enjoyed your review of her concert. I’ll be seeing her for the first time in April, as part of The Hotel Cafe Tour; pretty excited. Okay then, have you heard of Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins? IMO, their songs “Melt Your Heart” and “Rise Up With Fists” are especially good.
