Things I Don’t Like About iPhone 3G

Tagged: ,

Ok blah blah. This is all I talk about these days. Let’s get this out of the way and then we can start making out. I figure I should tell you the bad things because Apple has very powerful marketing and you’re just one tiny middle-class person with a burning desire to express your individualism through commercial consumerism.

1. It costs money

Yup, it’s not free. It’s not even cheap. You spend a lot of money to take part in AT&T’s exclusive deal with Apple. Even worse for other people who live in certain unfortunate countries. Why does stuff cost money? I did save some money by buying accessories from MonoPrice.com and Amazon.com.

2. Battery life

If you dick about with the phone all day, you’ll run out of battery. The main thing that sucks it up is 3G, GPS and maybe 3D games. I haven’t done measurements but if you’re a heavy user, you’ll want to charge it daily or maybe twice daily. All I know is that if I keep touching it, eventually it turns off and starts ignoring me; just like my first wife.

3. It’s a phone?

The “Phone” app isn’t great. My last mobile phone was the “dumb” kind with the numbers 0-9, * and #. It was very easy to dial numbers. Now I need to press Home, select Phone, select Keypad. The screens take a little longer than I want to show up. I want it to be lightning fast but it’s not. Partly because the software is slow and partly because it feels weird using a touchscreen to dial a phone number.

4. App Store

There’s nothing that you absolutely 100% need off the App Store. It’s going to take some time for the really awesome apps to bubble to the surface. Apps where the developer actually gives a shit about quality and support instead of snatching a quick buck off the iPhone gravy train.

What I’m not complaining about: the on-screen keyboard, the smudge marks, the DRM, or the developer NDA.

Maxie

I’m still on the fence about getting on… it’s just so pretty.

Thanks for posting this. I noticed getting to the phone part is quite cumbersome but I guess you just get used to it?

How do you feel about the lack of MMS? Is there a limit of how many texts you can have before you have to start erasing them?

Jack

Maxie: It is pretty! But it only comes in black and white and well there are plenty of other pretty phones out there that cost less. Check out the newer Blackberry and HTC phones.

all the wine: I’m not a big txt guy. I read that you can store up to 75,000 txt messages. I’ve used MMS maybe twice in my life so I don’t miss it. It’s a minor annoyance but I can always email photos to people.

Its between the blackberry bold (tmobile) and the iphone (at&t) for me. the only problem is waiting for the bold’s mysterious release.
