Ingrid Michaelson – Be OK Review

Ingrid’s new album

So it seems that I’ve been put on the list of people to notify if there’s any interesting news related to Ingrid Micahelson. All because I blogged about attending her fabulous gig in Seattle. Not that I’m complaining, I love her music to bits.

So our girl from Staten Island has a second album coming out October 14th and I was linked to a sneak peek by her promotion people. I clicked over and listened and let it swirl around in the space between my ears. In the interests of not being a lazy shill, I have to tell you my first impressions were not favorable.

I wasn’t in a mood to listen to her music, having moved on from the girly singer-songwriter genre to more masculine pursuits. But I persevered and gave the album a chance and it did pay off. Kinda. Lady In Spain and Oh What a Day are great tracks that really represent what I like about Ingrid’s songs. Her cover of Over The Rainbow makes you want to clutch your loved ones tight and dream of happier times.

Ingrid’s caught the ukulele fever!

But I have to say this 11-track album feels incomplete. With two covers of classic songs, two versions of Be OK, Keep Breathing (used in Grey’s Anatomy) and a live version of the previously-released The Way I Am, there is not much room left for original and new stuff. What is included is great and is just as lovely as her previous work but it leaves me wanting more.

All that aside, she’s touring again. Currently, she’s busy supporting Jason Mraz on his European tour but she’ll be doing a brand new US tour for this album. Mr. A-Z will actually be in Seattle the same time as Ingrid Michaelson (playing separate shows) and I bought tickets for them on November 9 and 10 respectively.

Oh, I love me some Ingrid, but I’m sad that the new album isn’t up to par :(
