The Ugly

Tagged:

You think I’m sick of talking about politics yet? Nope. I need to empty all these thoughts in my head.

Over the course of this election campaign, some pretty awful things were said. The thought bounced around my head while I listened to McCain’s concession speech and Obama’s acceptance speech. They were very gracious and sporting about the outcome of the election and they offered a very different sentiment than the ones in their attack ads. If you ever believed any of the attack ads, it can be difficult to reconcile the two disparate ideas.

I am guilty of buying into the negative hype and even reselling that special brand of schoolyard taunting that cuts deep. The kind of ugly shit that sick minds dream up in order to inflict as much hurt and pain as possible. Both campaigns showed some restraint and integrity but there was always someone on the attack, whether it was a low-level staffer, a regular attack dog, some crazy cable news anchor or a candidate gone rogue.

The ugliest yet comes from the freshly-defeated McCain camp that’s happy to air all sorts of crap about Sarah Palin. Let’s not forget who was supposed to have vetted her. The high ground would be to fire whomever thought she’d make a good Vice President and get over it. It’s as if the banks came on TV and started talking shit about all the poor people that can’t pay off their houses.

Finally, as if we needed a new reason to stop watching Fox News, Bill O’Reilly had the nerve to suggest that the Katie Couric interview was delivered in a snarky and sexist way by the liberal media. In that same breath, he discusses the juicy allegations of Palin’s shopping, wearing a towel and throwing “tantrums”. Evidently, he’s nailed the art of being incendiary because nothing annoys me more than an angry hypocrite.

More?

I am SO annoyed w/them for talking shit about her AFTER the fact. I have plans to write a blog post about that.

Gawd, it’s just so fucking irritating.

WE are to Blame

Don’t get me wrong – Palin was a disaster in waiting. And obviously Palin was used by the campaign.

All that Sarah Palin IS guilty of is that she allowed herself to be used. Clearly, she didn’t have the understanding that moving to the Big Leagues was going to be different than running for Mayor or even for Governor of an insulated, small population state.

There are a lot of people out there who get by with flash over substance – sizzle over steak. (Paris Hilton anyone?) Unfortunately, a run for President will examine and magnify and distort every possible flaw a person has and even those they don’t have … and Sarah either didn’t consider that or actually believed that she was qualified (I would bet on the latter). She had stars in her eyes. It’s sad to see what is now happening, but it is also so very predictable given how our society falls for the cult of “celebrity”.

I once had a boss who told me that “perception is reality” as he “reworked” (ie: lied about) the unpopular profit projections to send to head office. Unfortunately, people like him believe that a good lie is better than the hard truth.

So who is ultimately responsible? WE ARE. We are a society that encourages hubris and overreaching. We egg them on to reach the top and then we gather with stones in our hands to knock them down when they get there.

Sarah will be fine … she believes in her own PR. That’s the really frightening thing.

@deutlich Haha, I look forward to reading it. I like it when you get political and I’m clearly just baiting you with each post that I write.

@Pam Oh absolutely. Our society encourages this kind of cruelty and cannibalism that should have been dispensed with at a much younger age. We’ve got a long way to go before we grow up and realize that tearing about people’s lives is not something we should enjoy.

Hey Jack, We seem to hate who the media tells us to hate, don’t we? As a mob, we’re pretty pathetic and very very destructive.

We have to make sure we’re part of the right mob.

Want to start a mob with me? My mob likes ice cream. And rainbows.

We’re very friendly.
