I wrote this after waking up

Tagged:

I’m blogging less and less. If, in many years time, I tried to look back on this blog and see what was going on in my life, I would get nothing. That’s the problem. I don’t share my life here any more. In lieu of that, I have little else to share.

I don’t know if you’re down with the latest pop music but there’s a little ditty that was popular on the wireless not so long ago. It’s by a band that call themselves “Kool & the Gang”.

[Kool] How you gonna do it if you really don’t wanna dance/
by standing on the wall.

[The Gang] Get your back up off the wall!

On the surface, it may sound like they’re talking about dancing. On repeated listenings and deeper interpretation of the song, I feel that Kool is more likely talking about blogging.

How could I write more blog posts if I really never wanted to in the first place? How could I hope to write more by “standing on the wall” and letting fear dictate my actions? Indeed, I need to get my back up and off the wall.

Get down on it (Come on and)
Get down on it (If you really want it)
Get down on it (You gotta feel it)
Get down on it

Here’s where the dancing metaphor starts to strain. Whilst I’m assured “get down” is a popular phrase in dance culture, the object in this case (“it”) is not immediately obvious. Most likely, it refers to the dance floor or is perhaps making reference to an explicit sexual act.

What strikes me about this chorus is that the repetition doesn’t dilute the message. Each time the refrain is uttered, it builds. It builds and it excites the listener and soon it becomes more than a simple call to action; it is a mantra for the every blogger out there, anyone who finds themselves too afraid to create and standing on the wall.
